About Empire State Building
The Empire State Building opened in 1931 after just over a year of construction. Its 443 m includes the spire; the 102nd-floor roof is about 380 m up. It stayed the world's tallest building until 1970.
The upper floors are lit in changing colours at night, and the building has appeared in countless films. It is a handy yardstick: the Burj Khalifa is nearly twice its height.
