How to play Clamber
Clamber is a trivia game turned upside down: the obvious answer is worth nothing, and the rare one lifts you higher. Climb a ladder from the ground to the Moon.
The basics
- You get a prompt such as "Name a river in Africa" and 20 seconds to type an answer.
- The more people would think of your answer, the fewer rungs it adds. Rarer answers add more.
- Your ladder grows and the climber goes up past real landmarks, from the Statue of Liberty to the Moon.
- If the clock runs out you fall. After 3 falls you lose your grip and the climb ends.
Daily climb
The home page is today's climb. Everyone in the world gets the same 10 prompts, ordered from easy to hard, and you get one attempt per day. Reload the page and you pick up where you left off. The last prompt is the Summit Push: gains and losses count ×1.5.
Reaching the Moon takes 930 points and is the top of the daily ladder. When you finish you can share your result and compare it with a friend through a challenge link.
Endless and packs
Endless has no finish line. Prompts are random, nothing repeats within a run, and the clock shrinks as you go, from 20 seconds down to 10. Climb past the Moon to Mars, the Sun, Jupiter and Voyager 1. Choose a theme pack to keep to one subject. Your best height is saved on your device.
Points
| Answer | Points |
|---|---|
| Crowd (everyone says it) | 0, but no penalty |
| Common | +10 |
| Known | +25 |
| Uncommon | +45 |
| Rare | +70 |
| Rarest (almost nobody says it) | +100 |
| Skip a prompt | -20 |
| Fall (time runs out) | -60, and you slide to just below the last landmark you passed |
| Answer not on the list | 2 seconds off the clock, and you can try again |
Landmarks are milestones
There are 25 landmarks on the ladder. They show how far you have climbed, and the result screen tells you how many metres you stopped short of the next one. Be careful near the top of a stretch: a fall drops you below the last landmark you passed, so a fresh landmark can slip away again.
Tips
- Think of the second or third thing that comes to mind, not the first.
- Spelling does not need to be perfect, and common alternative names are accepted.
- A common answer is safe but earns nothing. A wild guess costs 2 seconds. Balance them.
- Stuck? Skipping costs 20 points, less than a fall.
- Practise in a theme pack on a subject you know well.
