About Inner Van Allen belt

The Van Allen belts are rings of charged particles trapped by Earth's magnetic field, discovered in 1958 from data returned by the first American satellite. The inner belt begins at roughly 1,000 km and extends several thousand kilometres higher.

Spacecraft that must cross it use shielding and pass through quickly. The Apollo crews flew through the belts on their way to the Moon and received only a modest dose of radiation.
