About Gagarin's orbit
On 12 April 1961 Yuri Gagarin flew once around the Earth in Vostok 1 and became the first person in space. His orbit ranged from about 169 km up to about 327 km, and the whole flight lasted 108 minutes.
He did not land in the capsule: he ejected a few kilometres above the ground and came down by parachute. The date is still celebrated in Russia as Cosmonautics Day.
